President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono: Indonesia stage leader.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono pointed his finger at the opposition when journalists asked him for comments over the massive protests against the fuel price hike plan, which have resulted in numerous violent incidents across Jakarta.
“It is not good for those who are not in power to carry out measures to oppose whatever the government does. That is not the politics that we want to promote,” Yudhoyono told a press briefing in Seoul, South Korea, shortly before departing for home on Thursday.
The President had been in Seoul since March 26 to attend the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit.
Numerous demonstrations throughout Jakarta and other major cities across the archipelago were reportedly attended by thousands of protesters on March 27. Some turned ugly after the House of Representatives and the government reached a provisional decision to follow through with plans to increase the subsidized fuel price by Rp 1,500 starting on April 1.
Previously, executives of the biggest opposition party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), announced that the party’s central executive board would order all party members down to the district level, as well as the party’s various organizations, to stage protests against the government’s fuel policy.
This has led many to assume that the PDI-P played significant role in mobilizing the massive protests on March 27.
“Demonstrations, protests, as well as any other kind of disapproval are guaranteed by Constitution, but hey must be carried out lawfully,” Yudhoyono said.
The President is expected to land at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, and is also scheduled to hold a limited Cabinet meeting in the airport’s VIP room.
Officials said the President wanted to hear immediate reports of the latest security situation from key Cabinet members such as National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, Indonesian Military commander Marshall Agus Suhartono, and Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto.
